NASS Conference news, May 24

Dear Participants of the Eighth Conference of the Nordic Association for Semiotic Studies, NASS – hereby some last minute conference news:

Getting to the Conference Site
We have refined the practical info site with maps of the campus and other central locations. From the city center (where the hotels are located), campus can be reached in 25 min. by foot or 6 min. by bus. For instance Bus A1 (direction Trige/Lystrup) goes through the city center every 10th minute and will take you right to the conference site at Nobel Parken (busstop: Ringgaden/Aarhus Universitet).

Invitation to Reception
Wednesday 29th at 17:30 you are all invited to a reception generously sponsored by the De Gruyter Mounton. With wine and snacks we will enjoy the poster session and celebrate the foundation of the International Association for Cognitive Semiotics.

Program
Due to a few cancellations we have made slight changes to the program. If you are a presenter, please check if your presentation has been moved to another timeslot in the program.

Abstracts

The abstracts are now available. Notice that for environmental reasons there will not be a printed version of the book of abstracts. If you prefer to have the abstracts in print, please make sure to print from home. However, there will be Internet access at the conference site so that you can browse the electronic book of abstracts on your laptop or tablet. For your convenience, the program in the book of abstracts has links from each title to corresponding abstracts making it easy to navigate and explore all the interesting papers.

There will not be a conference proceeding proper coming out of NASS VIII. However, we invite conference participants to submit contributions to a special double issue of Sign System Studies guest edited by Kristian Tylén and Luis Bruni on the theme of the conference: “The emergence of signs on multiple time scales”. Deadline for full manuscript submissions will be in fall 2013 and manuscripts will go through regular peer review (call for papers will follow soon).

Founding Meeting of The International Association for Cognitive Semiotics:
In connection with the NASS conference, Wednesday May 29th at 16:30 we also call the Founding Meeting of The International Association for Cognitive Semiotics. Registration:

Registration is now open. Take advantage of the early bird discounted conference fee and register before May 1st at the conference website:http://nordicsemiotics.org/VIII/. Registration fee includes coffee, lunches and conference materials for all three days as well as NASS membership fee.

Cancellation:

Unfortunately professor Luc Steels has had to cancel and will not be giving a plenary at the conference. However, we are happy to announce that professor Nicolas Fay (University of Western Australia,  http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=ntueIikAAAAJ&hl=en) will replace him. Professor Fay is doing intriguingly interesting experimental work on the emergence of signs and sign systems so we are very happy that he has accepted to jump in.

Conference program:

March 15th more than 60 researchers from more than 20 countries were notified that their abstracts had been accepted for oral or poster presentation. Judging from the high quality of submissions we anticipate a very stimulating conference program. A preliminary program will be announced at the conference web site soon.

About the Conference

Introduction

What are the basic mechanisms and conditions for the emergence of new signs and sign systems (such as codes, notational systems, verbal and sign languages, gesture, graphical symbols, pictorial expression, etc.)? To which extent should we search for these mechanisms at the level of biology, culture, cognition, phenomenological experience or interaction? And what are the relevant features of signs themselves making them emerge, survive and propagate in contexts of communication?

The conference brings together international scholars from a range of disciplines each addressing central questions relating to the evolution of signs on different time scales ranging from biological and cultural evolution to ontogeny and online social interaction.

Confirmed Plenary Speakers:

Jordan Zlatev (Lund University)

Fatima Cvrckova – (Charles University, Prague)

Bruno Galantucci (Yeshiva University, NY)

Susan Goldin-Meadow (University of Chicago)

Winfried Nöth (University of Kassel)

Nicolas Fay (University of Western Australia)
